Living in Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda is the insiders' pick of the coast — a historic small town of about 20,000 where the Peace River opens into Charlotte Harbor, Florida's second-largest natural harbor. Brick streets and tin-roofed blocks downtown, a Saturday farmers market, waterfront parks linked by the Harborwalk, and Fishermen's Village — the shopping-and-dining complex with its own marina — give it a charm the bigger cities can't manufacture. Across the river, the Sunseeker Resort added resort-scale dining in late 2023.

Boating is the town's superpower. Punta Gorda Isles offers roughly 45 miles of deep, city-maintained canals, most with true sailboat access — no fixed bridges between seawall and harbor — and Burnt Store Marina to the south wraps gated living around one of the Gulf coast's largest marinas. Charlotte Harbor serves up protected sailing, world-class tarpon and snook fishing, and day trips to Boca Grande, Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa. The nearest Gulf beach is a boat ride or roughly 45-minute drive — the honest trade of harborside living.

Punta Gorda Airport (PGD), an Allegiant base with dozens of nonstop routes, sits ten minutes from downtown, with RSW about 45 minutes south. Prices undercut Lee and Collier counties, season runs gentler than Naples, and the town's post-Charley rebuild left it both charming and battle-tested.
