Living in Fort Myers
Fort Myers is the working heart of the region — the historic county seat where Thomas Edison and Henry Ford wintered, now one of Florida's fastest-growing metros. The River District downtown delivers what most of Southwest Florida lacks: brick streets, galleries, music venues, craft breweries and a growing condo skyline on the Caloosahatchee, with the Edison and Ford Winter Estates just down palm-lined McGregor Boulevard. Spring training doubles the fun, with the Red Sox and Twins both based here.
Housing is the region's value play, from downtown high-rises and older character neighborhoods to the vast master-planned communities along the Daniels and Treeline corridors near RSW — which is itself midway through a 1.7 billion dollar terminal expansion. Fort Myers Beach, the city's barrier-island playground, is rebuilding steadily after Hurricane Ian: Margaritaville opened in late 2023, Times Square's clock and Friday market are back, and a new pier is planned with construction targeted for late 2026.
Boaters get the Caloosahatchee's straight shot to the Gulf or the cross-state Okeechobee Waterway; naturalists get Six Mile Cypress Slough's boardwalk ten minutes from the mall. Season swells traffic on US 41 and the beach bridges January through April, and elevation questions matter most near the river and shore — much of inland Fort Myers fares far better.
